GARMIN GDL 39 3D PORTABLE ADS-B / GPS RECEIVER
![]() |
![]() |
Introducing the GDL 39 3D, a portable ADS-B receiver, which adds simultaneous display of aircraft attitude information (pitch and roll), alongside rich interactive mapping, traffic, and weather within the Garmin Pilot application. The GDL 39 3D also features advanced traffic awareness including patent-pending TargetTrend™ relative motion technology, subscription-free weather, and industry-leading GPS technology. The GDL 39 3D portable ADS-B receiver is a simple and economical solution for pilots who want to receive the benefits of ADS-B In. The GDL 39 3D combines a dual link ADS-B receiver that conveniently supplies ADS-B traffic, weather, and WAAS GPS data to Bluetooth compatible iOS and Android devices. The Garmin Pilot app enables both the display of backup attitude information and the optional moving map page with weather and traffic overlay while in split screen mode, so it’s easy to view flight information alongside the attitude information at the same time. The GDL 39 3D’s ADS-B weather and traffic is also compatible with the aera 796/795, aera 500 series, and GPSMAP 696/695. In addition to back-up attitude information, pilots also receive subscription-free weather. Flight Information Service-Broadcast (FIS-B) weather is broadcast using the FAA’s 978 MHz UAT uplink and is similar to the existing weather products available today by commercial satellite weather providers. Weather products include NEXRAD imagery, METARs, TAFs, winds and temperatures aloft, PIREPs, NOTAMs, and more. Pilots can receive ADS-B traffic information and alerts to help identify potential traffic conflicts. The dual link GDL 39 3D offers a comprehensive view of traffic information and receives traffic on both ADS-B frequencies, 1090 ES and 978 UAT. ADS-B In technology enables the GDL 39 3D to receive Traffic Information Service-Broadcast (TIS-B) and helps pilots gain a better understanding of the traffic picture around them. The GDL 39 3D includes advanced ADS-B features, including TargetTrend™ relative motion tracking and SURF technology. TargetTrend provides a faster, more intuitive way of judging target trajectories and closure rates in relation to your aircraft''s position. In dense traffic environments, TargetTrend allows the pilot to more easily discern the aircraft that pose the greatest threat, which can save vital time and reduce workload. SURF technology also supports the display of ADS-B-equipped surface targets on the map screen so pilots are more aware of other aircraft and surface vehicles on the ramp. The smart GDL 39 3D collects and stores all available traffic and weather data in the vicinity so it is available as soon as you turn on the display. It''s capable of simultaneously providing wireless data to 2 devices while hardwired to a third. Back-up attitude information, traffic, and weather are currently available within Garmin Pilot compatible mobile devices via the built-in Bluetooth connection. Garmin products including the aera® 795/796, aera 500 series, and GPSMAP® 695/696 are traffic and weather compatible, while the GPSMAP 396/495/496 have the capability to display traffic targets (up to seven). As Garmin continues to update portable compatibility, check the ‘Compatible Devices’ tab on the GDL 39 3D webpage to understand the most up-to-date details. Also included with the purchase of the GDL 39 3D is a free trial of Garmin Pilot. |

I gave it 2 stars because even though its a Garmin it does not play well with the Aera 796. The unit came a tether cable that also supplies the current to run the 39-3d. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xabURzlMxMQ --------- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acfqO6cMu4A See both videos and see the problems. It seems to work with the bluetooth option. |

What is the coverage area for THE GDL 39 3D? Will it work in Central America?
Unfortunately, GDL 39 3D is for use in the United States. The Garmin Pilot App which must be used in conjunction with the unit is also only compatible in the United States as well.
What iOS and Android flight apps are compatible with the Garmin 39 3D?
The Garmin GDL 39 3D is only compatible with the Garmin Pilot App for both IOS and Android systems.
Can I mount this in a horizontal orientation? If so, does it lose and functionality?
Per Garmin, What’s important for reception is positioning the GDL 39 where it has a clear view of the sky, that it be mounted at least 3.3 feet away from the path of any high powered transmitter antenna, and should be mounted at least 6 inches away from a magnetic compass. If you can mount it meeting these requirements, you should have good reception.
Will the application work with a WiFi only iPad?
The Garmin GDL 39 will connect with a WIFI only IPAD through the IPAD's Bluetooth capabilities.
Can the GDL39 be plugged into a cigarette lighter? If so, can can it be left permanently plugged in? 12 or 36 volts an issue? Thanks.
The GDL 39 comes with a power adapter that can be plugged into the cigarette lighter. You may keep it plugged in. The adapter was designed to work with 12 V cigarette lighter receptacles only.
What traffic services will I receive from the GDL 39?
The GDL 39 has the ability to receive two types of traffic; air-to-air and ground-to-air. The GDL 39 can detect and display other aircraft in the vicinity of your aircraft, that are equipped with an ADS-B Out transponder with ES (Extended Squitter) or a Universal Access Transceiver (UAT). The GDL 39 also has the ability to receive Traffic Information Service (TIS-B) from FAA ground stations transmitted over the 1090 MHz datalink. TIS-B traffic includes targets being tracked through ADS-B technology and paints a comprehensive picture of traffic within +/- 15NM and +/- 3,500 feet of your position. This traffic service will only be available to aircraft that are equipped with an approved ADS-B Out solution and a certified WAAS GPS position source.
How can I update the firmware on the GDL 39?
The process for updating the firmware will vary depending on what device you are using with the GDL 39. If you are using the GDL 39 along with a Garmin aviation portable device the software will be received through the portable device. The software for your portable can be obtained by either visiting myGarmin.com or using our WebUpdater program. If you are using the GDL 39 along with an iOS or Android moible device you can use the GDL 39 Utility Application available on the iTunes App Store and the Google Play Store. This is a free download and requires a Bluetooth connection between the GDL 39 and the mobile device. In either case, the unit will only update when connected to an external power source.
How many devices can I connect to the GDL 39?
The GDL 39 can be connected to as many as three devices at one time. A connection to the GDL 39 can be made two different ways; either by using a power/data cable or a Bluetooth connection. The GDL 39 can be connected to several Garmin aviation portables via a power/data cable (included with the GDL 39) as well as two bluetooth enabled devices (i.e. aera 796, iPad, or Android tablet). Compatible Garmin Aviation products include the aera 795/796, aera 5XX Series, GPSMAP 695/696, GPSMAP 495/496, GPSMAP 396, G3X Garmin Pilot Application for iOS and Android tablets and phones.
What weather services will I receive from the GDL 39?
The GDL 39 has the ability to receive subscription free Flight Information Service (FIS-B) that is broadcast from FAA ground stations around the United States and the Gulf of Mexico. FIS-B weather products include NEXRAD in the Continental U.S., NEXRAD Regional, TFR, TAF, PIREP, NOTAM, SIGMET/AIRMET, METAR, and Winds Aloft information. One key difference between FIS-B and satellite based weather services is that FIS-B is broadcast from the ground upward. Therefore your proximity to the ground station may present some line-of-sight disturbances and services may not be received until airborne.
Can the GDL 39 display traffic and weather on my certified panel mounted avionics?
No, the GDL 39 will only interface with Garmin Aviation portables and experimental products, as well as iOS and Android tablets and phones. These products include the aera 796/795, GPSMAP 696/695, aera 5XX Series, GPSMAP 496/495, GPSMAP 396, and the G3X.
Does this come with a battery?
No, the GDL 39 receives its power via the power data cable which connects to your GPS device.
Will I need to upgrade my 795 purchased in 2011 when I connect a GDL 39 3D?
No. Your 795 will support the GDL 39 3D. No need to update.
I just purchased a Garmin Aera 660 and now looking at the GDL 39. Does the 3D have a clearer picture of weather than the 39? Do they both have to be hard wired or just a power cable between the 39 and the 660? The way Im reading the Q&A the power to both is supplied from the 660 12 volt cigarette lighter, correct?
The 3D provides synthetic vision on the Aera 660. The weather and traffic reception is the same on either unit.
The units do not have to be hardwired. Both have batteries and can be paired via Bluetooth. The Aera 660 to GDL cable can be used as an alternative to this connection (part # 10-06029).
