micro EFIS is a solid-state backup attitude gyro with an optional airdata
interface. The basic micro EFIS shows aircraft attitude and GPS information
on the screen of a Compaq iPaq PDA mounted on the aircrafts yoke. The attitude
information is derived from a small AHRS (Attitude & Heading Reference System)
module that is remotely mounted. AHRS module is powered by aircraft power
or its own internal 9V battery will last over 5 hours. In addition to aircraft
attitude, the display also depicts an electronic turn rate indicator and
skid ball. The lower portion of the PDA screen displays GPS data including,
ground speed, ground track, track error, distance
to waypoint, time to waypoint, waypoint ID, and a CDI with 1 mile full scale.
Any panel mounted GPS with a serial output or portable GPS with a NMEA output
can drive the GPS portion of the display. In the event of an electrical
system or vacuum failure, the micro EFIS allows the pilot to maintain full
control of the aircraft while also providing GPS guidance to a waypoint.
Since the iPAQ and AHRS run on their own batteries, the microEFIS is completely
independent of any aircraft system. Additional panel space NOT required
since the iPAQ is mounted on the yoke in full view of the pilot. Since crucial
GPS information is also displayed, there is no need to also have a portable
GPS located on the yoke. The basic microEFIS is designed as a backup attitude
indicator for certified aircraft and experimental aircraft. Since all of
the components are full portable (including the AHRS module), no approvals
are required. System includes: Gyro, PC cable, power cable (cigarette lighter),
cradle, and GPS. iPAQ 3600 or 3700 NOT included.
