AVWX PREMIUM WORKSHOP: ESTIMATING CLOUD TOPS

(Click image for a larger view)
A good estimation of the cloud tops is like the finest gold, especially for those pilots flying under instrument flight rules (IFR) during the cold season when structural icing is a real threat.

Many pilots struggle to find a reasonable estimate of the vertical extent of the clouds primarily because there are very few weather products that clearly depict the height of these tops. Unless there are many recent PIREPs along your proposed route of flight, actual cloud top heights must be inferred by examining and often integrating several specific weather sources to include radiosonde observations, forecast soundings and analyses, VAD wind profiles and infrared satellite images. Even then, there’s no guarantee you’ll have the right answer with any certainty. In this program, you'll learn how to estimate the vertical extent of most cloud tops.

This premium workshop includes the following eight (8) training modules:
  • An overview - quantifying uncertainty
  • Pilot reports (PIREPs)
  • Radiosonde observations (RAOBs)
  • Forecast soundings and analyses
  • VAD Wind Profiles (VWPs)
  • Color-enhanced infrared satellite images
  • Stratocumulus clouds
  • Why not echo tops?

  • CD-ROM Workshop requires Adobe Flash
