Overview

Trig makes the world’s smallest and lightest certified GA transponders. The TT22 Trig compact transponder can fit into the tightest panel space. This allows general aviation, light sport and glider pilots to fit other instrumentation or displays that otherwise might not have been possible.

The TT22 is a class 1 transponder suitable for use in higher performance aircraft flying above 15,000 feet and / or above 175 knots.

The TT22 is a two part transponder with a compact control head; this includes an inbuilt altitude encoder - saving further space and expense. A separate hardware box can be installed anywhere in the airframe. The mounted control head is only 54mm (2 3/25”) deep and can be fitted in panel using a 57mm (2 ¼”) round hole or smaller compact mount, the unit ships with the necessary fittings for both install options. The TT22 unit is highly efficient and is ideal for use via an auxiliary battery in gliding or lighter than air flight.

The TT22 transponder is easy to operate and with a crisp, bright display it is also easy to read in all lighting conditions. The higher powered TT22 can be used in IFR and VFR flight in high performance aircraft, over 175 knots and/or above 15,000 feet. The transponder control head is splash proof too so it’s ideal for open cockpit and seaplane operations.

Mode A and C transponders are now being replaced by Mode S technology which is optimised for tomorrow’s airspace requirements. Despite its modest size the TT22 is a heavyweight performer, at 250 watts nominal power output this class 1 transponder meets the latest FAA TSO C166b standards for ADS-B Out.

Trig were the first company in the world to offer a ‘mandate ready’ certified 1090ES ADS-B Out compliant solution. The TT22 is popular in the U.S. where a certified WAAS GPS, and a ground air determination device are also required forming the ideal 2020 ADS-B solution. It’s worth remembering that to receive all ADS-B In transmissions in the U.S. the FAA requires a functioning certified ADS-B Out device, so don’t miss out on airspace information - fit a Trig TT22.

Q&A

Q: What is included in the Trig TT 22 11-08322?

The TT 22 11-08322 comes with transponder head, remote transponder, mounting tray and connector kit for both units. Shielded wire, coax cable, coax connector and transponder antenna must be purchased separate. (The Trig has a female TNC connector out).

Q: Is the transponder antenna that is used for the Trig TT22 the same as mode C transponder antenna?

Yes, the same antenna for a mode C transponder can be used on a mode S transponder.

Q: Will the TRIG TT22 work with a Garmin GTN 650 for ADS-B out?

Per the distributor, there currently is not a TSO in regard to interfacing the TT22 with the GTN 650.

Q: For p/n 11-08322, does the display have a back light? Is the back light adjustable? And if so, does it automatically adjust the brightness by sensing the ambient light level, or is it manually adjustable? How's the display readability under full sun? And at night?

For part number 11-08322 Trig has introduced TC20 software v1.10 that allows manual adjustable backlighting. The backlight is not automatic and is manually adjustable through the TC20 controller. The LCD has a reflective screen at the back which allows it to be read in direct sunlight. At night readability is dependent on the adjustment of the backlighting, the brighter the adjustment the easier it will be to read.

Q: If I get the Trig TT22, will I also have to get the TN70 in order to be compliant with ADS-B in 2020?

If there is no other WAAS GPS source available then the TN70 will be required to provide positional data to the TT22 for ADS-B compliance.

Q: Can the Trig T22 be used with a Garmin 20A GPS source for a non TSO ADS-B out only solution for experimental aircraft? No GX3 system, but using the Garmmin Aera 660.

No. It is recommended that you use the Trig TN 70.

Q: I use a Garmin 695 along with a Garmin GDL 39 in my experimental aircraft for ADSB and WX. Would adding the Trig 22 complete what I need for ADSB OUT compliance?

No, you would still need an approved WAAS GPS source, such as the TN 70 to be ADS-B out compliant.

Q: The Trig GPS is approved for ADS-B out for aircraft not flying in ADS-B required areas. Is there a WaaS GPS source available that works with the 22 that can be used in B & C airspace? I have a major space problem in my aircraft (1929 Waco ATO) and need remote boxes.

The TN-70 (pn: 11-13061) is an approved WAAS GPS source for the TT-22.

Q: Is this Trig TT-22 unit ADS-A and ADS-B capable?

The Trigg TT-22 is ADS-B compliant when hooked up to a WAAS GPS source. The manual does not mention ADS A compliance.

Q: Is the Trig T22 compatible with the Garmin 530 WAAS for the 2020 mandate? Also will the custom harness option include wiring for the Garmin 530 WAAS?

The TT22 transponder is certified to TSO-C166b and meets the requirements of AC 20-165B when directly connected to the GPS units listed below, and will form the basis of a 14 CFR 91.227 compliant ADS-B installation.
