General Information The Candler Field Museum in cooperation with the Candler Field Flying Club has an outstanding youth mentorship program. This program is designed to impart knowledge in aviation related subjects to young people who have an interest in aviation. There are several facets to the program. Under experienced adult guidance students will be taught the skills of restoring and maintaining aircraft along with being provided the opportunity to actually work on aircraft. In addition, those interested will have the opportunity to learn how to pilot an airplane through the flying club. This program is very structured and the students must have a strong commitment to learn. Those interested in obtaining their aircraft mechanic license will be afforded the opportunity to log hours toward the time requirement for this license. Students who elect to learn to actually fly an airplane will be taught all of the skills needed for their pilot’s license. Students actually earn their flying time by working in the museum or the flying club. This affords the individual with a method of learning to fly with minimal expense.

DETAILS OF THE PROGRAM
  • Age requirement is 12-20 years of age.
  • Potential candidates are encouraged to do one or all of the following: attend the museum’s 2 day Air Academy, participate in the EAA Young Eagle Program, and join the local Civil Air Patrol squadron.
  • Potential students and their parents will be interviewed by museum personnel prior to acceptance into the program.
  • Students must be sure that their formal education takes priority over this program. They must make passing grades in their school.
  • The individual needs to understand that a strong commitment is required to be a part of the program. We will only accept students who are committed to the program.
  • The student must be a member of the museum.
  • Students who desire flight training must join the Candler Field Flying Club.
  • Each student will be required to log a minimum of 1 day per week or 4 days per month. If the student has not put in at least 10 days per quarter they will be evaluated.
  • The work will be scheduled for each Saturday from 0830 – 1700. Also, each Wednesday evening from 1700 – 2100.
  • All students are expected to log their work time in a logbook provided by the museum. The logged time may be applied to the minimum hour requirement to acquire a mechanic license.
  • Those students who elect to fly will earn flying time in the Candler Field Flying Club through hours worked either in the museum or on flying club aircraft. For every 10 hours of work logged one hour of flight time will be awarded in the flying club Citabria or Cessna 172.
  • Students will be responsible for paying a flight instructor and for fuel used by the airplane.
  • Students are expected to volunteer at major museum events.
  • A waiver of liability will be signed by parents.

General Information Part 61 is a section in the great big book of the FAR's. If you look in the FAR Part 61, you'll see the FAA's rules for obtaining pilot certificates and ratings. You'll note that there is no FAA approval process for flight schools that operate under Part 61 of the FARs. That's why most do it this way. Part 61 can provide a flexible training experience tailored to the student's ability. Your instructor is a big part of your flight training. This person is your guide through a difficult process and you'll want to focus on their background, ratings, and qualifications.
