These are good starters, I like how they have an external solenoid so you can replace just that if it goes bad, as opposed to the skytec which has the solenoid included in the entire unit. The solenoids don’t seem to last as long as the entire starters do, it’s ridiculous to have to replace an entire starter when it’s simply a simple solenoid that needs replacing. The only thing I don’t like about these starters is that they are heavy. But these are the work horses that have been on these engines forever, you really can’t go wrong with them. Another upside is also that you can send these in for an overhaul to a good shop, and I cannot find anybody who will overhaul a Skytec. We use both kinds on our trainers, we get equal life out of both. The secret to getting a ton of time out of your starters is prime your airplane properly in the first place with your primer. Count 10 BLADES go by when you hit start, then get off the key or button, let the engine fire up. You should never have to lay into a starter for very long. Reevaluate your shutdown procedures if you can’t start quickly, you’re possibly not leaning enough during taxi and you’re putting the airplane away with dirty plugs. Over 40 years of Cessna, Piper and Stinson planes in my Flight schools has taught me this.
Sky-Tec - Starter 12V - Overhauled - 646238-2OE
The starter’s paint and machined parts were so good I thought it was new. It spins the engine faster and is smooth. The only downside was the newer starter didn’t have threaded holes for the solenoid so it had to be moved to the firewall, which is probably a better place for the solenoid anyway., Delivery was fast.
Sky-Tec - Starter 12V - Overhauled - 646238-2OE
This was a convenient and timely solution to pick up the part for our downed aircraft. However, It would be important to know that only new starters come with an O-ring and the overhauled ones do not.
