Overview

A complete oil quantity sensor must consist of the following two items, the OSE-1 Electronics, and an Oil Quantity Sensor. The sensor length must be custom made to the customer's specification. (See the documents, "Will This Sensor Fit?" and "Oil Quantity Sensor Pre-order Form" below).

This oil quantity sensor with its (required) electronics package (OSE-1) will give the pilot a real time oil quantity while in flight or on the ground. This system is not meant to replace any other traditional methods of checking oil quantity. It is a new device that the pilot of a small aircraft can use in flight that he or she never had before. It will also measure oil sump temperature, which is often higher than the engine oil temperature, and often rises faster. The electronics enclosure features two analog outputs ( 0 to 5V), one for oil quantity and the other for oil temperature. It also features a four digital output alarms (open collector type) for sensor out of calibration, oil level warning, oil level caution, and over oil temperature. You may program the alarm trigger values for those outputs and choose a scaling for both analog outputs. The electronics package is required as all sensors are passive devices.

Presently, we have two types of oil sensors available, one for standard Lycoming engine oil pan fittings (1/2NPT) and the other for standard Continental engine oil pan fittings (5/8-18). The sensor will fit quite a number of engines, oil pans, oil sumps and oil containers. Presently, the length of sensors are custom built. The sensor's length must be determined by the customer at the time of purchase. Later, we plan to build them up ahead of time as we create a database of standard lengths ordered. Sensors with other fitting types may already be in our design schedule. Please check with us if you require a different fitting type.

PLEASE READ below before ordering! Installing the Oil Quantity Sensor (from the TOP or Up-Side-Down)

You may install the sensor from the top side of your oil pan or oil container but, . . please be aware of two situations:

First, please understand that the temperature sensor is mounted in the base of the sensor. This being the case, it will not function properly because it will not be immersed in the oil unless the oil tank is always full. (For the future, we are working on a design that may be used if you desire to mount this sensor from the oil container top.)

Second, also be aware that when you calibrate the oil quantity sensor amounts by adding your quarts of oil, the sensor may not sense your lowest oil level. If this is the case, your sensor tip may not extend into the oil at the very bottom of your oil pan when adding your first quart. The oil level must be between the sensor base and the sensor tip for the first "quantity" of oil. If this is the case, you might try adding two quarts as your "increment" instead of a one quart increment. This may allow you to get the oil level beyond the tip of the inverted sensor. It is up to the installer/customer to determine where your lowest oil level is for your installation for an inverted sensor installation.

Will this Oil Sensor Fit? We would like to make certain that the sensor that you order will fit your aircraft. If you order one of our standard available sensors, and never had oil in it, or scars from installation, we may be able to refund your money if you make a mistake in ordering. However, if you order a custom made sensor and find that it does not fit, we will not be able to refund your money for the sensor portion of your order. In order to be sure of the fit, please download and read the following document. (Will this Sensor Fit?)

The two, mostly green pictures of an oil quan. gauge and oil temp. gauge do not come with this oil sensor. These are just two of many screens available on our model AG6. Customers frequently purchase our oil quan. gauge and oil temp. gauge with the oil sensor. You can find these Here

IF ORDERING, PLEASE preview the manual, the document titled "Will this sensor fit" and fill out the form below and send it to us. (Oil Quan Sensor Preorder Form)

Additional Info

On #10-07674: If you would like to have 12" wires soldered to your supplied DSUB connector, please also order item #10-07675. Otherwise, you will have to supply your own #20AWG wiring to the connector.

On #10-07675: If you would like to have 12" wires attached to your DSUB connector that is supplied with the OSE-1, please order this item. Otherwise, you will have to solder your own #20AWG wiring to the connector.

On #10-07676 & #10-07077: This oil quantity sensor (requires) the use of the electronics package (OSE-1). It will give the pilot a real time oil quantity and oil temperature while in flight or on the ground. This sensor will fit quite a number of engines, oil pans, oil sumps and oil containers.Presently, the length of sensor is customer determined and custom built. The sensor's length must be determined by the customer at the time of purchase. In order to aid this process, we have provided an oil quantity sensor pre-order form that the customer should fill out before purchase. Please find this document below.

On #10-07678 and #10-07679: This is one option for the Oil Quantity Sensor system. The extension cable is only meant to be used if the 48" sensor cable (supplied on the sensor) cannot reach the OSE-1 electronics package. We recommend that the overall distance from sensor to electronics be less than 78" if possible. This will best preserve the overall accuracy of the system.

Q: Are these oil level sensors approved for use in US Certified aircraft?

This does not come with an FAA/PMA approval or have and STC. This is made for experimental/homebuilt aircraft.
