Overview

EkoPrime is a single-part, water-based primer designed for use on metal, composite, fabric, wood, vinyl, and many plastics. EkoPrime is primarily designed to provide very effective corrosion resistance for steel and aluminum surfaces and to create an excellent surface for EkoPoly Premium or EkoCrylic to adhere to. The sandability of EkoPrime is exceptional and it can normally be sanded 30-45 minutes after application. EkoPrime is also very flexible and may be used on fabric over EkoFill for the purpose of additional filling and sanding or to provide a light base color for bright colors.

EkoPrime is an excellent product for priming bare metal on steel tube fuselages as well as properly etched aluminum airframes. Steel tube fuselages should be also be top coated with EkoCrylic for maximum durability. It is acceptable to adhere fabric to EkoPrime using EkoBond.

EkoPrime is a wonderful product for home builders due to the ability to pour it directly into the paint gun, spray small parts, and pour the remaining product back in to the can. As with all Stewart Systems products, the paint gun is then cleaned up with water. One limitation to EkoPrime is that it is not resistant to solvents. Lacquer thinner, MEK, or auto gas will attack it. If the primer will be left exposed in an area where it may come in contact with solvents or fuel, EkoPoxy would be a better fit.

EkoPrime is available in four colors: white, smoke grey, charcoal, and zinc chromate green (tinted to simulate ZC primer and does not contain zinc chromate).

Reviews

Easy to use, didnt totally stink up the booth, covered scratches beautifully straight out of the can, and made for an excellent finished product!

This stuff cant be beat. I can prime and paint in my attached garage with no worries about fumes or harmful chemicals going into the house. The other stuff is covered wagon technology.

Needed to fill the weave in 1.3 oz fiberglass cloth that was applied over birch plywood fuselage. Two coats did the job nicely without the need of heavy “filler” primers and then mucho sanding and contouring . I lightly sanded with 220 dry before painting, but believe I could have just painted over a smooth application of this primer/sealer. JJ Sinclair

I used Stewarts system before on another airplane, it is water based so not toxic and or cancer causing . It works good, easier to use and not requiring a breathing device just a mask. I have not shoot this color of paint but we shall see. Again like with the cylinders I bought a few weeks ago in 10 years I will be able to tell you how good this material is, well see how long it lasts.

I have used this primer for about 4 years and had good results, even when the primer was well past the claimed shelf life.

This primer may not be quite as tough as epoxy primer, but its other properties more than make up for it. It's easy to spray with no need for extensive protective gear and no solvent fumes. Whatever you don't spray can be poured back into the can - try that with Akzo. My only very minor gripe is that it's fairly easy to knock off of sharper corners, but I think it's a problem with any primer.

Q: Can ekoprime go straight onto 6061 skins, or must I sand all surfaces first?

You must first prep before you apply the ekoprime.

Yes, it is sandable.

Q: How many square feet does the 1 gal cover?

Yes, it is.

Q: Can I use this primer over an aircraft that is all ready painted with a little sanding?

Yes this primer can be applied to a painted surface that has been sanded.

Q: Can this be used in place of dope on fabric covering?

No, the uses are listed as Steel, Aluminum, Fiberglass, Wood, Plastics, Concrete, PVC, Pre-Finished Siding, Steel Decks.
