Overview

Hex head aircraft bolts are made of high-strength type 4037 or 8740 alloy steel (type 8740 is most commonly used). The bolts are centerless ground and threaded after heat treatment. Minimum tensile strength 125,000 PSI. Cadmium plated per specification QQ-P-416A, Type II, Class 3. Available with shank drilled for cotter pin or undrilled for stop nut application, and with or without drilled head for safety wire. Specify bolts to have undrilled shank by adding letter "A" after the dash number. For bolts with drilled head add letter "H" after the AN number. See illustrated examples. "C" represents Type 431 Stainless Steel (contains iron which is magnetic). The length of AN aircraft bolts is measured from under the head to the end of the shank. The "grip" is the unthreaded portion of the shank. See table for conversion of length and/or grip to proper AN callout.

Note: Drilled bolts listed above are drilled shank only. To order drilled head only or both drilled head and shank bolts, please use our AN Bolt Selector by clicking the link below.

The bolts from Aircraft Spruce have always been fantastic and are the only ones used on my plane. And thats why Im using them as axles for another heavy duty project, I need reliability and durability under load.

Q&A

Q: Can you provide an average weight for AN6-7A?

The average weight for quantity 1 of AN6-7A is 0.04 lbs.

Q: Do the undrilled AN6 bolts listed here still have a hole through the bolt's head?

No, the undrilled bolts listed here have no holes. To find the bolts with drilled head only, keyword search " AN Bolt Selector " on our website. The first result will be a drop down selection page and you can choose the different drilled options for each bolt we carry.

Q: How do I add the H to the part number for a AN6H-30A bolt?

The fastest way to add this bolt to your shopping cart would be to go to the cart screen, and enter it in the area that says "Quick Add to Cart". Just put AN6H-30A in part # box and whatever quantity you want in the quantity box and click add. That particular bolt is not order-able from this page.

Q: Are these FAA PMA replacements or only for homebuilt aircraft?

Hardware does not need FAA Approval. The hardware listed on this page is MIL spec and can be used on certified or homebuilt aircraft.
