Overview

In the early 1900s, small planes flew with single ignition systems powered by adapted automobile engines using Champion-brand automotive spark plugs. By the 1920s, the company had developed innovative spark plugs designed specifically for the aviation industry.

Champion Aerospace designs and manufactures Champion-brand piston-engine ignition components for both OEM and aftermarket for general aviation aircraft applications. Every spark plug manufactured has built-in design advantages that assure longer life and greater reliability.

A typical spark plug number with symbol explanation

1. Resistor None--No Resistor R--Mil-Spec. Resistor-Erosion protection

5. Electrode Design None-Conventional single E -- Two prong massive
N -- 4 prong massive
W -- Fine wire (Iridium) B --2 prong massive, Tangent to Center
P--Fine wire (Platinum)

* Shielded barrel thread size. Check barrel size - 5/8x24 or 3/4x20 threads before ordering and select proper plug number, See page 236 for Sparkplug Application Table.

** The "Iridium S" sparkplugs replace the Platinum and "W" Iridium types. Increased bore diameter improves scavenging action. Greater clearance volume can accept more combustion deposits. Single Iridium electrode offers greater resistance to lead attack. Easy to clean Easy to gap

NOTE:
Spark plugs are shipped in factory sealed plastic cases. Opened spark plug cases make the spark plugs non-returnable. Please do not open any spark plug until you are sure you have received the correct spark plugs for your application.

Q: How does REM37BY differ from REM40E?

REM37BY:

  • R (Resistor) = Mil-Spec. Resistor-Erosion protection
  • E (Barrel Style) = Shielded 5/8"-24 Thread
  • B (Mounting Thread/Reach/Hex Size)= 18mm, 13/16" 2.06cm, 7/8" 2.22cm
  • 37 (Heat Rating Position) = 26 is cold and 50 is hot
  • BY (Electrode Design) = Twin Electrodes Nickel (B) and Projected Core Nose (Y)
REM40E:
  • R (Resistor) = Mil-Spec. Resistor-Erosion protection
  • E (Barrel Style) = Shielded 5/8"-24 Thread
  • M (Mounting Thread/Reach/Hex Size)= 18mm, 1/2" 1.27cm, 7/8" 2.22cm

Q: Is there a difference between the UREM40E and the REM40E spark plugs? Are they interchangeable?

There is no difference in the applications of UREM40E and REM40E. They are the same spark plug manufactured by different companies. Tempest makes the UREM40E and Champion makes the REM40E.

Q: Do Champion REM40E plugs come with the required gasket?

Yes, each plug will include a copper gasket.

Q: Do these Champion spark plugs have the new resistor, (does not have a slot when looking into the barrel)?

Yes, if there is no slot, the plugs have the updated Fired in Resistor.

Q: What would be the price for a case, how many in the case.. 24?

We have added the dropdown where you can select the box of 12 to this web page.

Q: Have received wrong plugs, how can I ensure the plugs ordered have the 5/8 x 24 barrel thread and the not the 3/4 x 20 barrel thread

REM40E have 5/8 x 24 barrel.

No 8130 form is not included with each plug. 8130-3 export form can be furnished if requested at time of checkout.

Q: Is the gap preset on this REM40E plug and which gap tool fits this plug?

These do come with a gap set, but Champion does recommend checking the gap before install. Something like our part number 12-01692 would work as a gap gauge.
