I generally love these things. However, Id recommend putting a small dab of silicone grease on the little spur and worm gears underneath, which are driven by the adjustment screws. Otherwise, they are sticky and hard to turn.

This is my second PAI-700. I bought the first one in 2007 and transferred it progressively through 3 gyroplanes. It has always worked perfectly and is responsive enough to keep up with aggressive gyroplane maneuvering. In the last installation it was sitting in the open above the instrument coaming and last year was heavily rained on overnight (after the gyro was left out uncovered thinking it wouldnt rain). Humidity then fogged it up but it still worked. A month ago I ordered a new PAI-700 to replace the fogged one, intending to permanently retire it after a long working life. Within 3 days the new PAI-700 had arrived (to Australia). However, the old compass evidently decided to soldier on, because between the day I ordered the new one and was intending to put it in, the fogging in the old one cleared up. So, now Im keeping the new one as a spare! The only difference between the old and new one are different serial numbers and the dial on the older one is a bit faded compered to the brand new one.

I installed this, then went flying. Set my DG on the runway heading, and once in the air headed north. I made a small correction to zero the compass on north and did the same on east. All other headings were right on. No other adjustments necessary. I notice it takes a moment to settle on the any new heading. It didnt behave exactly like a DG in that respect, but to set your DG you world be right on.

Pretty simple install on the Cherokee I own...I like the vertical card style over the whiskey. The whiskey makes me feel like I’m drinking and I need to think backwards. So far the vertical has proven to work well and has been very accurate. Setup took about 15 mins at an avionics shop that did the compass swing for me. Hopefully I have no issues with this compass down the road!

Such an improvement over the old whiskey compass. It is now actually a useful piece of equipment in the plane. In the 2 years I owned my plane, I had rarely ever looked at the ball compass, I use this all the time now for quick reference. Easy 10 minute install and alignment.

PAI is fantastic to work with. I bought a 182 with an aged PAI-700. The company overhauled it to like new and operated flawlessly. If youre considering buying one, the factory stands behind the product. Love mine, and would buy another one should the occasion arise.

Vertical compasses are the best way to go for GA. This one is one of the best. Would buy it again.

My plane had one of these installed already, but the glass was cracked and the paint was flaking. Not sure how old it was, but found the exact same part number still being sold. Purchased and owner-installed with A&P oversight. Instructions were very thorough and clear. Makes the whole cockpit look much cleaner. Operation is smooth and its nice that it swings in same direction as HI. Partial panel work is easier.

So far I love it. But when calibrating the compass card, I noticed very small movements, like under five degrees, the card doesnt move unless there is movement, like engine vibration. (Not a problem when the engine is running), but if your holding the compass very still and turn it, nothing happens in very small movements, like under five degrees, tap it on the side with your finger gently and it moves and points correctly. A none issue in a running plane Other than that, I really like it, I was so tired of struggling to see my compass numbers, this is super easy to see, and turns in the same direction of my directional gyro.

Easy mount using the same mount as the whiskey compass. Wired for illumination. (Consider using quick disconnect fittings) internal magnets are much stronger than a whiskeycompass, so your plane may require shielding and/or balancing balls compensators. Easy to read.

Lots of deviation, 10° at some headings. Definitely not as accurate as the whiskey compass, but nice to read.

love the vertical card idea, but this compass has never stayed accurate, then it finally just died. off by at least 30 degrees.

Purchased the vertical card compass and it worked fine for 8 months, but returning home on a night flight last night it locked up and will not move in either direction. It was not bumped, dropped or jarred byond what would be expected as usual for an aircraft installation. I have requested a replacement, but uncertain what the warranty is. I gave 3 stars based on the assumption that they will replace quickley as it is required to fly! TSOd equipment should not fail within 1 year!

Grass cover had fallen out of the center of the compass and its now way off... its like 8 months old.

Sticky during turns. Freezes while turning then suddenly catches up after leveling off. I gave it 2 stars because it looks good and is easy to read but forget timed compass turns during IFR training. Wish I kept my whiskey compass.

Compass worked fine, but for heavy duty not suitable. Glass broke and fell out, North orientation was not possible. Bearings worn out after 2 years. The Indikation disk is very nice and readable, but we needed to remove it.

Just installed this compass in a customers aircraft and the compensator is not working, looks like mechanical issue with the E-W adjustment. Very disappointed.

Compass worked fine for the first 2-3 weeks after installation, then it froze in the same heading. I couldnt adjust it and it stayed frozen after I removed it from the airplane. The vendor, Precision Aviation Inc., claimed there was nothing wrong with it and wanted a $165 fee to inspect it. The compass was under warranty. I protested and Aircraft Spruce sent me a replacement but the process left me without a compass for a month.
