Reviews

This thing is expensive, but its BRIGHT. I lost the lens on our old one and decided to spend the extra money to upgrade. Money well spent. Can put a price on being the MOST visible.

Whelen 9052051 Red/White 14VDC

November 26, 2024

I purchased to replace a broken Whelen Legacy Strobe. My strobe was a split White/Red and I figured it would be a simple install. While the replacement was easy, a few things popped up that were surpising. First, the depth of the light was lower than my old light. I need to add a decent silicone bead to seal the gap between the fin cap and the light. Second, the screw holes that were already in the fin cap did not allow for the perfect alignement of the White/Red split. There is no adjustment to get this aligned perfectly, but it was close enough for now. Third, and most important, I was under the impression that there was no STC and therefore a pilot can replace without IA sign-off and 337. After I received the light I went to Whelen website and found that they had an STC issued for most airframes in 2019. One can argue the regs from there, but it would have been nice to know that there was an STC. Lastly, propbably should have gotten the Orion 360, the light is smaller and seems to use a better lens that disperses the light better.

Oh very impressive lot! Installation was a breeze on my 172. I cannot say anything good about the price though. That price is outrageous.

Relatively easy to install with existing Whelen gas tube tail strobe hardware. Just needed to drill out 4 rivets, trim down the removed mounting disk, and use it inside the fin as a backing plate for the 6-32 mounting screws and lock nuts. Two wires from the existing wiring were then used to bring 14 volts to the unit. The strobe provides significant perifferal light for night taxing.

Installed on my 1967 Mooney M20F. 14V unit, install was a direct replacement for the coffee grinder rotating beacon. A&P charged an hour for install and filed a 337. Extremely bright, no background headset noise, and looks great.

Very bright. Easy to install (PA-28). Replaced Whelen strobe/beacon. Lighter weight. Way over-priced though.

This replacement was a piece of cake, and talk about bright.... We have 10 Cessna 172s and we will be adding this to all of them eventually. We also have this on our 1958 Travel Air. You can see the white portion a mile away on the ground in daylight.

We’re very happy with it. Installation was painless. The beacon light signature is well superior to the original we removed. Low draw on electrical system. Lighter weight. Can’t think of any downside, except maybe getting PMA approval for Mooney’s and other aircraft makes?

You cannot believe how bright this strobe is. We can see the light in the day when the plane is still on the ramp over a mile away. Wish I could do something line this on the tail of my Cessna 172’s

Q: Is this a legal replacement for a Whelen A469A strobe?

Per the supplier: This is a LED replacement but it depends on the aircraft as these are STC'd.

Q: What is the difference between the 5-hole mount and the 5-hole lower mount?

Lower mount has a drain hole in it.

Q: On model # 9052051 - 14 volt, it comes with a mount. what is the mount for and/or can you send me a picture?

The mount is part of the assembly. Please review the 'Documents' tab. We have posted the dimensional drawing so you can get a better understanding of the assembly.

Q: WHEELEN LED RED/WHITE BEACON 14V #9052055 ... Spruce # 11- 09908 .... do I need a mount? Is it the A440? Or does a mount come with it?

This unit, p/n 11-09908, does have a 3-3/4" mount that would fit a Whelen A440 style mount, or same size fairing. Base has 3 mounting holes to attach to an A440 or like fairing.

Q: Does this unit require a separate strobe power supply, or can it be wired direct from the switch?

There is no separate power supply required. You can wire this directly from the switch.

Q: Regarding WHELEN LED FLASHING BEACON (RED & WHITE) 90520 SERIES: Does the red face towards the front of the aircraft and the white towards the back or the other way around?

The mounting holes are "keyed" so that it can only be mounted red forward.

Q: Can this be installed as a new addition to a plane? My 150 currently doesnt have strobe/beacon lights. The STC mentions it being installed as a replacement. Does the STC still hold for a new install with a 337?

The STC would cover such an installation.

Q: Is this Whelen LED 90520 light a PMA part?

It is TSO compliant.

Q: I have a Whelen 70509 Beacon mounted on the bottom of my plane. Is there an adapter that makes this a simple replacement?

The 9052001 comes with a universal mounting adapter plate and will fit the original hole pattern of the 70509 assembly. This should be a very straightforward install.

Q: What size breaker and gauge wire to mount 15 feet from switch?

The max output on the 01-0790520-01 (11-07615) is 2amps. We recommend 1.25 times the max output so a 3 amp breaker should be sufficient. In regards to the wiring the customer can utilize 18 gauge wire 2 conductor.
