Overview

In aviation, CO is commonly produced by equipment such as piston-driven aircraft, ground servicing equipment, and airside vehicles. Turbine engine aircraft exhaust and auxiliary power unit (APU) exhaust can also contribute to the accumulation of unsafe levels of CO. Being aware of the potential for carbon monoxide (CO) exposure and poisoning is crucial for eliminating safety hazards and preventing accidents. The AV8 Inspector’s advanced sensor technology allows for accurate readings of carbon monoxide concentrations, before it becomes a problem

The sensor seems to work good. No CO detected in two test flights. Mounted to panel with velcro. Removed the spring clamp.

SENSORCON AV8 INSPECTOR PORTABLE CARBON MONOXIDE MONITOR

February 3, 2022

May have saved my life. In Nov 2021 night flight from Addison, TX to Corpus Christi I experienced some strange feelings on my arrival. I felt extremely fatigued and slightly nauseous & dizzy when I stepped out of the airplane. It took two days before I felt ok. I attributed it to possible food poisoning. By chance I saw a youtube video about CO and decided to buy a digital CO detector. After reading instructions I took a test flight and the readings were about 14 PPM while I taxied. Upon reaching cruising altitude readings had increased to 48 PPM with the heater turned off. I had experienced that level or more for about 3 hours on that night flight. The CO 3 month old button detector stuck on the panel never showed any indication of exposure. Airplane is going in for corrections asap. Be sure not to test this very sensitive unit on your tailpipe, it will destroy it.

Aircraft Spruce assumes no responsibility or liability for any issue or problem which may arise from any repair, modification or other work done from this knowledge base. Q: Is the battery field replacable? The manual provides no instructions or information on battery replacement.

Yes the batteries are replaceable and you can buy anywhere. Lithium CR123A.

Q: What is the difference between the standard AV8 Inspector and the PRO?

The Pro version adds Vibrating Alarm, Alarm Adjust, and 24 Hour TWA. Vibrating alarm adds another layer of notice capability by vibrating the unit when the alarm is triggered. Alarm adjust allows you to adjust the high and low values for alarm trigger (they are preset for the standard model). Finally, 24 hour TWA is Time Weighted Average which displays the maximum 8 hour average in the last 24 hours.

Q: How does the bracket for the Sensorcon AV8 mount to the panel?

It is attached with 4 screws or bolts, they are not included since mounting locations and applications vary.

Q: Is the battery replaceable?

Yes the batteries are replaceable and you can buy anywhere. Lithium CR123A.

Q: Since the CR batteries are replaceable, how long will this product continue to function effectively?

Per AV8: "The unit should work for two years before the battery needs to be replaced, although this would also be determined by how often the alarm goes off."

Q: Is the Sensorcon AV8 unit always on? Or do you have to turn it off and on?

No, this has an on/off switch.

Q: The battery is good for two years. But is the detector good for longer use? I see some are only good for three years before it's no longer to be used.

Yes, this is good for more than 2 years. The warranty is also good for 2 years. They offer out of warranty services as well.
