Actually, the *main* need for tire talc is not to ease the insertion of the tube into the tire, although it does help, but because without tire talc the tube will gradually chafe against the inside of the tire and wear through, eventually causing an inconvenient flat. If you remove the tube from a tire, after period of use without talc, you will see many small particles of rubber or even lumps. talc in the tire and on the tube prevents these fiction flats.
