The battery is fine. The book says it fits a C172R, and it does but not perfectly. Adding torque to the fastening bolts induces stress into the small plastic wings on the side of the battery. I added two aluminum tubes around the bolts to help distribute the load. The non-M version uses a metal hold-down bar since it has no wings. Sadly the battery is slowly becoming the most expensive item north of the firewall.

Hopefully this new style Gill will prove to be an improvement which it should for its insanely high price!. There are new designs of batts out there now which are much cheaper and last much longer but their STCs dont seem to cover the more common types of airplanes. Hopefully that will change soon!

No folds, creases or foreign object damage was found. Both developed pin holes in thin areas of the tube. Both failures were within three weeks and twenty hours of use. So far the Goodyear is maintaining inflation. Too soon to rate though.

All these Leakguard tubes suck. They develop pin holes in them and slow leak. $100 some dollars for a tube that doesn’t last. Years ago the tubes were a fraction of the price and lasted for years. Now they cost as much or more than the tire and often times leak before the tire is shot. Leakguard is just a name and has nothing to do with guarding leaks. Maybe $140 Goodyear tube would be better but I use lots of these Leakguards and they DO NOT LAST.

Immediately after installation an attempt to add air was unsuccessful. Neither an air fitting from compressor or from portable tank would add air, but instead only succeeded in letting all air out for a totally flat tire. Repeated efforts to add air failed so ended up removing fairing and tire for better access to valve. Took tire to another mechanic who had a fitting that would add air, but another would not. It seems the valve stem is too far recessed for most filler fittings to properly engage it. Very inconvenient at the least... hope never need to add air again, especially in a transient situation any attempt could turn into a flat tire.
