Overview

To select the proper length stud, first select the grommet, for example 4002-G. Next, select the receptacle, such as 214-16. After determining the total grip thickness, use the grommet column under which the selected grommet and receptacle appear. Use the dash number which appears opposite the determined total grip thickness.

Example: If the total determined grip thickness “G” was. 144, the stud dash number for the above 4002-G grommet and 214-16 receptacle would be -4. The stud part number would be 4002-4.

Reviews

After 7 years in service in the cowl of my 182, I am finding I have to replace some of the stainless steel camlocs because the locking pin through the end of the stud has come loose. The pin then migrates, which causes problems - they wont lock, or worse yet you cant unlock them and your cowl is stuck on the plane. My A&P tells me this is a common issue with stainless camlocs and I should have bought the steel ones. Well, I like the look of the stainless ones too much for that so I purchased a stock of replacements and a pair of camloc pliers, and now I can replace them as they turn up loose. 5 so far. At least they are easy to replace (if you have the pliers), and I still like the shiny and corrosion-free looks of them.

Good quality stainless steel fasteners the guys are swapping out from the zinc coated on the aircraft.

I just replaced the old slotted-head camlocks on an Aztec with the new style slotted. The slotted pocket makes me worry less about the screwdriver slipping out and gouging the cowl. A very easy upgrade!

Q&A

Q: Camlock grip thickness? How is this defined? Is this the thickness of the Panel that the stud is in plus the thickness of the panel that has the receptacle?

The grip for 4000 series studs is determined by the the grommet being used and both the stud & receptacle panel thicknesses. If you are using a flush grommet, the grip is just the two panel thicknesses, but if you are using a plus flush grommet, you need to add .054" for the 4002-N3, or .029" for the other plus flush grommets to get the grip thickness.
